Chanter Hire
We have a stock of practice chanters for pupils to begin learning with. This gives pupils the chance to try before investing in their own instrument. Chanters are available for all pupils of our classes or lessons. Choose to rent via the form on our classes page or contact us to learn more.

Tutors will confirm payment details when issuing a chanter. To arrange payment before class, please contact us.
Care — what we ask
- Look after the chanter carefully and store it safely when not in use.
- Clean the mouthpiece regularly with warm soapy water.
- Avoid touching or adjusting the reed.
- Report any damage or issues to the tutors promptly.
- Return the chanter if requested or when lessons finish.
Purchasing a chanter
When you’re ready to buy, you can choose to purchase one of our chanters, or we can help you find the right practice chanter from other sources. Speak to a tutor at class or contact us for advice.
Chanters range from £40 to £200+. The sound differences are minimal, with prices normally reflecting design and materials.
- Junior: for smaller hands.
- Standard: Most common; recommended if fingers can reach!
- Long: Pipe chanter-like hole spacing.
We recommend McCallum chanters for their great sound quality and low price point. There is a good selection of chanters available to buy from the National Piping Centre Shop.
